We still have a little less than three weeks of summer vacation left, so the battle against boredom continues. We've done a pretty good job so far armed with play days, swim lessons, and art classes, but most of Arwen's friends have returned to their schools, the swim lessons end tomorrow, and the art classes are only once a week. So today I added something new to the "Things to Do" list by introducing Arwen to the public library.
I'm surprised I didn't take her sooner because Arwen loves books and reading. As a child, I loved to read and spent hours at a time browsing our local library. Around the second or third grade, we started writing reports, and a trip to the library to complete the assignment opened up a whole new world for me. I began checking out two or three books at a time, taking them straight home, reading every available second, and then returning to the library within a day or two to exchange the books for a new batch. By the fifth grade, my friend, Michele, and I became volunteers at the library, with the primary duty of returning the books to the shelves and making sure they were all in order. This was fun for me, and I just love to see that same excitement about books and reading in my daughter.
Arwen took to the library like a natural, racing up the stairs and then stopping to whisper at the entrance, "We need to be quiet in the library." She wasted no time, immediately pulling my arm and guiding me toward the shelves of books. "Where are the kid books?!?!" Her eyes lit up as we turned the corner, and she spotted her section. She let go of my hand and started scanning the shelves. In no time, Arwen had a stack of a half a dozen books on her table and took a seat to begin reading. She flipped through some of the books on her own, and when I was finished filling out our library card applications, I read her a few. I enjoyed both the quality time with Arwen as well as the air conditioning.
When it was time to go, I told Arwen she could select two books to take home. She talked me into four and then said, "We're borrowing these, right?" The whole concept of borrowing is new to Arwen (more about this later.) She's certainly entertained by it, but I don't think she's decided if she likes it just yet. Regardless, she was ecstatic when the librarian handed over her very own library card and insisted on carrying it and her books back to the car herself. Our first library visit was a successful one, and hopefully we'll keep this a regular thing. Maybe I'll even get to pick out a few books for me next time.
